Wow, I feel a great load has come off of my chest. This makes me feel a lot more confident of my ability to make it into MIT.

Thanks for the info Mr. Great tips Mr. I, for one, am I strong supporter of the interview. I believe that it is an outstanding opportunity to convey the many facets of your life that may not be quantified or adequately expressed on paper.

Best of luck with interviews to all the applicants! I recently completed an interview with another school that, I hope, went really well, so I identified with a lot of the messages you were conveying!

Although you had me going for a little bit with your description of the perfect student! Keep up the encouarging work! Nice posting from Matt.

Anyway, just my lame addition from an EC to the vast populace reading this blog. Everyone, thanks for the kind words and comments.

And Laura, thanks for the co-blogger support! But I have a little point to add: I was hoping for questions, and anything goes.

So true. SO true. In fact, nobody — even adults — is perfect. And, as John said, if everybody were perfect, how insufferably boring life would be!

Yes we can give you the name of an EC living closer to you in Singapore. It sounds like for you this will make things much easier. For others who may wish to do this, you can do the same as Ying Wei.

But, do this only if it is much more convenient for you. And i have a question to ask: According to my knowledge, usually students who live in Malaysia are arranged to have interview in Kuala Lumpur.

However, the state i live is much more nearer to Singapore, so can i arrange an interview in Singapore if i cant get an EC living in my state?

Glad in your case yours went well. The advantage of this is we get to know the schools, advisors, campus cultures, and so forth.

We live in the community so we know the town well. Alas, if you apply from my schools, you come to me …. But you must admit, it is hard to make a second first impression!

The interviews, in that way, are different that the SATs, which are organized to allow students to retake. We are here to help with the application process.

I encourage them to contact me for whatever advice or questions they might have. As for some perspective on the application essay, I will post something early next week that might help.

So, not too worried. What I am worried about is what to write in My essay. But the word limit really is troublesome. Any ideas? Or should we be inbetween and bring one or two things to an interview?

I see no reason to bring any supporting materials. Just stop in for a chat and get to know yout EC. Those are for you application, not the interview.

As an EC, I wanted to talk about something that has come up in several interviews. I call them little tragedies.

Sometimes, the interviewee sneezes or mispronounces a word, or mixes up a concept, or perhaps gently spills some drinking water, which I always provide.

The MIT prospect gets very nervous about these little things, and it is important to emphasize and reassure them that these are not the determinants of whether or not a student gets into MIT.

It is the culmination of a year academic and extracurricular program initiatives that matter, as well as their passion and personality Take the time to reinforce that a nervous cough, or the need to have a question repeated is unimportant and not a factor in their selection.

We all need reassurance and these wonderful kids we meet can always use a touch of empathy. Most students have such a document by senior year.

I might have a dozen interviews in an especially busy year. So I took an old MIT handout written by Bonnie Kellerman yes, we actually used paper in those days and have expanded on it and posted it online for prospective students.

The hard part training, working hard is over, and now is the time to relax and enjoy the experience you have worked for. Good to keep in mind.

I think it is advice well taken. I have occasionally seen summary sheets and they ARE helpful. And 2 Tell me about yourself.

But not too much. ECs know we are part of the digital world and social media. However, avoid questions that ask us to directly compare MIT to another institution that we may have attended, regardless of whether or not you may be submitting an application there as well.

ECs are not supposed to know your grades or test scores, or see recommendation letters from teachers or coaches. Our assessment of your application is to be based only on our interview experience with you.

Most ECs will take notes during the interview, and that is to be expected, but please refrain from bringing copies of transcripts, test scores, and the like.

Come prepared with questions for us. The interview is really more of a two-way conversation than a formal interview, and we are happy to answer questions from students.

Feel free to ask us about the classes we took, how we decided what to major in, where we lived, our activities, if we missed home, etc. If you do ask questions, however, make sure they are intelligent ones that show you have done at least a little bit of research on MIT.

This is a time for you to help learn whether MIT might be a good fit for you, so help yourself make the most of it.

Try not to be too nervous — but we understand if you are. Every EC knows that the college application process is a stressful one, and that all applicants are nervous during the interview.

My advice is not to let it get the best of you. Remember that all ECs, regardless of our age, background, or occupation, are all volunteering to conduct interviews because we believe that MIT is an amazing place and we want to help the next generation of MIT students succeed.

Most Early Action interviews will take place in November and most Regular Action interviews will take place in January. If we are unable to offer you an interview, it will be waived and your application will not be adversely affected.

Before you meet with your EC, try to anticipate some of the questions you might be asked.

MIT SFMBA Application Tips: The Interview Process

Interviews are by invitation only. They are a required step in the process. An invitation to interview signals that your application has reached an advanced stage of consideration, but it does not guarantee admission.

Candidates will be invited by email to in-person interviews. Interviews will be conducted on our campus and in several hub cities around the globe.

Please note that we make every effort to conduct interviews on weekdays and during business hours. MBA Through intellectual rigor and experiential learning, this full-time, two-year MBA program develops leaders who make a difference in the world.

Master of Finance A rigorous, hands-on program that prepares adaptive problem solvers for premier finance careers. Master of Business Analytics A month program focused on applying the tools of modern data science, optimization and machine learning to solve real-world business problems.

PhD A doctoral program that produces outstanding scholars who are leading in their fields of research. Each time I am lucky enough to be back on campus it immediately feels like home, and I remember my own interview like it was yesterday.

Remember that every interview will be unique, and that is what MIT wants, but these suggestions should help to alleviate a bit of nervousness regardless of where, when, and with whom your interview is with.

ECs know that the college application season is a stressful and busy time for applicants and that sometimes it can be hard to find a convenient time and place for your interview which is why the admissions office has deadlines for contacting your EC.

While most of the applicants I have interviewed contact me before the deadlines, there is always a small rush of requests right before or right after the deadline.

If circumstances lead you to a last-minute request for an interview, try to be especially flexible in your availability, as your EC also has to scramble to accommodate you and have time to write your report before the application deadline.

Be nice in your emails — first impressions count. Your EC only has a very limited amount of time to get to know you and make a recommendation about you.

This includes the email or phone communication to set up the interview. Remember that part of what ECs look for are NICE people, and this includes people who are nice in their correspondence.

This is especially true if you are contacting your EC at the last minute and asking to be quickly accommodated. See 1. Dress nicely — but not too nicely.

ECs know that the students we interview are real kids, and that is what we expect. This is not an interview for a Wall Street bank. Bring something cool.

I always encourage the students I interview to bring something they are proud of to share with me. I have had applicants bring editions of their school newspaper or literary magazines that have articles they have written, laptops to show me websites they have built or movies they have made, engineering projects they are tinkering with when they should be doing homework, and yearbooks that include photos or layouts they have worked on.

It often seems to help break the ice when we have something physical to discuss, and it makes you, the applicant, much more memorable to us, especially when we have a number of interviews in a short period of time.

Being able to present and discuss your work will be a huge and important skill in college and beyond, and presenting something cool to your EC is a great opportunity to practice.

Remember that your EC may or may not have any idea about the fields you are most interested in or they may be an expert!!

Being able to explain something to someone outside of your field is critical as you begin applying for grants, fellowships, or pitching projects to clients.

Note — if you are formally submitting artwork or other materials in conjunction with your application, the interview is not a substitute for that.

Some interviews flow naturally as a conversation, while others take on a more traditional question and answer format.

Either is ok and not a judgment on the applicant.
